Meeting with U.S. Dept. of HHS
Office of Civil Rights Director

DCHHS Director Zachary Thompson met today with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Ms. Joceyln Samuels visited Dallas and spoke at the Resource Center about OCR's recent work enforcing civil rights protections for persons with HIV/AIDS and implementing Section 1557, the civil rights provision of the Affordable Care Act. Section 1557 prohibits discrimination in health programs and activities on the bases of race, color, national origin, disability, age, and sex. Additionally, it extends civil rights obligations to the health insurance marketplaces (including all plans of issuers participating in the marketplace) and all health programs and activities funded or operated by HHS.
