What is the Diversion Program?  The Diversion Program concentrates on changing the behavior of at-risk youth.  Participants are families whose children are experiencing behavioral problems such as: truancy, stealing, fighting, lying, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and violence toward family members.

The first step in the process is a three-hour evening session that includes programming for both parents and their teens.  Parents or legal guardians must attend.  After a short information session as a group, the youth are escorted to the Detention Center area where they experience a mock intake.  Parents remain in the classroom where they participate in education about family roles, effective parenting skills and connecting with additional resources.  In many cases, families go on to enroll in in-home counseling with the STAR Program (Services to at Risk Youth).

Eligibility:
Parents and/or guardians and their children ages 9-16 are eligible to enroll.  Parents must be willing to sign releases authorizing youth to participate in the program.  Youth already in the Dallas County Juvenile Justice System are not eligible.

Program hours:
The program is offered 5:30pm – 9:00pm on the first and third Monday of each month, except on holidays.  Advance enrollment is required.

Participation in the Diversion Program is free although you MUST have a reservation to attend.
