History: |
Several gravel pits surround the remnants of an Upper Cretaceous swamp. There are numerous species of aquatic plants in the swamp including a robust grove of Sibal Minor Palms. Eight species of turtles have been observed by USACE biologists along with a naturally occurring population of American Alligators. Cinnamon Teals, mallard, blue egrets are some of the birds observed here. A unique natural resource, the area is open only by permit to schools, universities, state and federal agencies for study at this time. |
