Improvements:

Parking, trails, and boardwalks will be designed at a later date so that the flora and fauna can be observed without compromising the habitat and personal safety.

History:

Several gravel pits surround the remnants of an Upper Cretaceous swamp.  There are numerous species of aquatic plants in the swamp including a robust grove of Sibal Minor Palms.  Eight species of turtles have been observed by USACE biologists along with a naturally occurring population of American Alligators.  Cinnamon Teals, mallard, blue egrets are some of the birds observed here.  A unique natural resource, the area is open only by permit to schools, universities, state and federal agencies for study at this time.
