I convened a call with the National Weather Service and many of our public and private partner agencies today in anticipation of deteriorating weather conditions. The National Weather Service is forecasting rain throughout the rest of the day that will transition to freezing rain starting around 7-8pm and then to sleet and snow throughout the late evening and early morning hours. Dallas County Government Offices and Courts will remain open for regular operating hours today. There is a strong possibility we may have a delayed opening or closure tomorrow, Thursday, March 5th.
We will make announcements regarding any changes in operating hours or closures for Thursday as early as tonight if the forecast confidence is high. My decision will be made in my capacity as Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The decision will be based in large part on the National Weather Service’s forecast and TxDOT’s assessment of the driving conditions. Please avoid unnecessary travel later this evening and tomorrow morning and when you travel please use extreme caution and allot extra time.
THURSDAY MORNING – There is a high likelihood of freezing precipitation Wednesday night with temperatures below freezing until around noon Thursday. Road conditions will be affected and won’t likely improve until late Thursday morning continuing throughout the day as a combination of rising temperatures, road pretreatment and vehicle traffic melt snow. Please use extreme caution and allot extra time for travel.
TxDOT will attempt to pretreat roads with brine; however, due to ongoing rain their ability to do so and the effect of treatment will be limited. Road treatment is ongoing and Thursday morning treatments will primarily be sanding operations.
If you drive Wednesday evening or Thursday, please allot extra time and use extreme caution. Carry an ice scraper, water, blankets and emergency items. Our team at Homeland Security and Emergency Management and our first responder community will be on the job throughout the event to keep you safe. Please help us by avoiding unnecessary travel and exercising precautions on icy or snowy surfaces.
Stay warm, dry and safe.
