The information below is a summary life insurance programs provided to Dallas County employees. The County is joined with a cooperative insurance group along with other city and county agencies. That insurance company is Public Employee Benefits Cooperative (PEBC).

Date of Eligibility:
Life insurance coverage begins on the 1st day of the month after you complete 30 consecutive calendar days of active employment as a regular, full-time employee.

The 30-day waiting period is measured from your Hire Date, which is defined as the date you actively begin working for Dallas County on an active, full-time basis.

For example, if your first day of regular, active employment is January 15th, you will be eligible for life insurance coverage on March 1st. If your first day of regular, active employment is February 1st, you will be eligible for life insurance coverage on April 1st, because the month of February has less than 30 days.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible, you must meet these requirements:

  • You must be a regular full-time employee
  • You must continue to be actively employed (working 40 hours or more a week); and
  • You must complete the enrollment process within 14 days of your Hire Date or by the Annual Enrollment deadline. (Note: The annual open enrollment period is the month of November)

Two programs are offered - BASIC and OPTIONAL

The BASIC program is paid for by the County. The OPTIONAL program is paid for by the employee. Both programs are with The Hartford Life Insurance Company.

BASIC Employee Term Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance
(Benefits for your beneficiaries in the event of your death)

If you are a “benefits eligible” employee, the County provides this coverage at no cost to you. Under the Basic Term Life plan, if you die, your beneficiary receives a single payment from the plan. If the cause of death is due to an accident, in addition to term life benefits, your beneficiary is eligible for an AD&D insurance benefit. You could also qualify to receive partial AD&D benefits if you suffer serious injuries from an accident.

Your life insurance amount on January 1st is based on your annual salary on December 31st of the prior year, or your hire date. Your AD&D coverage equals your basic term life insurance amount. *Your Basic Life and AD&D coverage will not be less than $20,000 or more than $50,000. Your coverage amount reduces at age 70. For more information, please contact Yesenia Leon in the Human Resources/Civil Service Department at (214) 653-6161.

OPTIONAL Term Life and AD&D Insurance
(Benefits for your beneficiaries in the event of your death)

Dallas County also offers an Optional Term Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy that you can purchase at 1 or 2X your annual salary. The AD&D insurance provides specified benefits for a covered accidental bodily injury that directly causes dismemberment (i.e. loss of a hand, foot or eye).
