Dear Friend:

Early voting in Texas kicks off next Monday and before the polls open, it is important for voters to understand the recent changes made to the Texas photo voter identification (ID) requirements.

In response to a federal court declaring the voter ID law discriminatory, voters who do not possess an acceptable form of photo ID may instead produce alternative identification and sign a "reasonable impediment declaration" explaining why they do not have photo ID. Once completed and signed, the voter will be allowed to vote a full, regular ballot.

Acceptable forms of photo ID:

  • Texas driver’s license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
  • Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
  • Texas Concealed Handgun license issued by DPS
  • U.S. military identification card containing the person’s photograph
  • U.S. citizenship certificate with the person’s photograph
  • U.S. passport

Acceptable forms of alternative ID:

  • Voter Registration Card
  • Voter Registration Certificate
  • Utility Bill
  • Bank Statement or paycheck
  • Birth Certificate (must be an original copy)
  • Driver’s License expired less than four years
  • Another government issued document containing a voter’s name and address

Please note: the address on the photo ID or supporting ID presented by the voter does not have to match the address on the list of registered voters. Also, if a voter does not have any of the items listed above, or has a photo ID, but it is not in their possession at the time of voting, the voter may still cast a provisional ballot.

Early voting begins Monday, October 24 and concludes Friday, November 4. Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th. For a list of polling locations and times, CLICK HERE.

If you have questions regarding the ID requirements, please call my office at 214-653-6668.

Dallas County Votes to Expand Accessibility,
Availability of Voting Options

On September 20, 2016, the Dallas County Commissioners Court voted 4-1

to approve the Elections Department plan that expands the locations

and times of voting options to the residents of Dallas County.

In addition to the 25 permanent and established early voting locations, each Dallas County Commissioner’s district will have an additional 2 temporary locations. Because Pleasant Grove has traditionally been an underserved community, it will get 1 more for a total of 3 temporary early voting locations and a grand total of 7 places to vote early in District 1.

There is more accessibility for younger voters through mobile voting centers that will be on a rotating two-day schedule at each of the seven main Dallas County Community College District campuses. This gives the opportunity for students and faculty to vote without missing classes or arranging transportation to off-site locations.

And lastly, each early voting location will have expanded hours the first week of voting.

BOTH weeks of early voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Now people who have jobs, family responsibilities, and other obligations, can get to the polls.

Road & Bridge District 1 Shows Respect to Judge Steele

I am greatly saddened by the passing of Judge Cleo Steele – may he rest in peace and tranquility. He and Barbara were a force for change in Dallas County while remaining kind and considerate to all. He will be mightily missed and never forgotten for the unfailing leadership, strength, insight and friendship he showed at every turn. My heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
