Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia, in a resolution on behalf of the Dallas County Commissioners Court, recognized the Resource Center’s 30th anniversary and lauded the center’s efforts within the community, Sept. 3.
Founded in 1983, the Resource Center is one of the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations of its kind, with over 1,100 volunteers and more than 50 paid staff members. The organization manages to serve over 60,000 people in the Dallas area each year through the various programs and services offered.
Commissioner Garcia noted the center’s “dedicated, professional and excellent services,” and commended the Resource Center’s accomplishments.
Following a motion made by Commissioners Theresa Daniel and Elba Garcia, Dallas County Commissioners Court has designated Aug. 26, 2013 as Women’s Equality Day in Dallas County.
Nearly a century ago, Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was passed, granting women the right to vote. Texas was the ninth state to ratify the amendment and the first state in the south to do so.
Commissioner Daniel reminded those in the court that despite having overcome obstacles, “acceptance of equality is something we must all practice and teach future generations.”
Following a report by the Saranac Group LLC, the Dallas County Hospital District Board will be forming a new committee for Corporate Governance, Compliance and Ethics. The change was outlined in a resolution passed in Commissioners Court Aug. 20.
The Dallas County Hospital District Board of Managers is appointed by the Dallas County Commissioners Court, with seven members total. The board manages the Parkland Hospital and Healthcare System.
Other changes to come, stemming from the report, include improved communication between the Board and the Commissioners Court and require that future appointees to the Board provide a written acknowledgement of their fiduciary duties before taking their office.
