What is the Expunction Expo?

An arrest record can be a significant impediment to a good quality of life. Often, individuals with arrest records find it hard to obtain jobs, housing, or financial aid for college.

Under certain specific circumstances outlined in Article 55.01 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, individuals may be able to clear arrests from their records through a process called an expunction. If eligible, an expunction generally results in the destruction of records related to an arrest and authorizes the person to deny that the arrest ever occurred. However, for many Dallas County residents, access to the expunction process remains out of reach due to an inability to hire an attorney or uncertainty of how to begin the process.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office in partnership with the Dallas County District Clerk's Office is hosting their 9th Annual Expunction Expo to help clear criminal records of people who, by law, are eligible for an expunction. Since its inception in 2017, this event has helped clear criminal records for nearly 3,000 people.

How do I know if I MAY be eligible for an expunction?

Per Texas statute, individuals who have offenses on their criminal record MAY qualify for an expunction if any of the following apply:

  • You were arrested but a charge was never filed or was no billed by the grand jury,
  • Your Felony, Misdemeanor Class A, or Misdemeanor Class B charge was dismissed without any type of community supervision or probation prior to dismissal (and the required time period, depending on the offense, has expired),
  • You successfully completed Class C deferred adjudication or your Class C case was dismissed, and two years has expired since the dismissal,
  • You were acquitted (found "not guilty") on your charge by a judge, jury, or appellate court,
  • You were convicted of a crime but later pardoned by the Governor of Texas or the President of the United States, or
  • You were convicted before 09/01/2021 for unlawfully carrying a weapon under Section 46.02(a) of the Penal Code.

 If any of the above apply, you MAY qualify for an expunction.

For our expo, only DALLAS COUNTY offenses can be considered. City of Dallas tickets and offenses may also qualify.

Your case is NOT ELIGIBLE for an expunction if:

  • It is STILL PENDING;
  • You were CONVICTEDin the case, even if you only paid a fine; or
  • You received PROBATION, COMMUNITY SUPERVISION, or DEFERRED ADJUDICATIONfor a Felony, Class A Misdemeanor, or Class B Misdemeanor, even if your case was later dismissed.

The above list includes some—but not all—of the cases that are not eligible for an expunction.
