The abbreviations used in the "Codes" column are:

  • [AA] = African American topics (often used in conjunction with another code)
  • [AC] = archeology - pre-historic and historic archeological sites (see [NA] for historic Native American/Indian topics)
  • [AD] = Art Deco [architectural style]
  • [AG] = agriculture, general (not specific farms, ranches, or plantations); includes cultivation of the soil, production of crops, livestock raising not including cattle, land conservation, and land management; use in conjunction with [BG] to code agricultural buildings
  • [AL] = Alsatian immigrants/immigration
  • [AM] = African Methodist Episcopal or Colored/Christian Methodist Episcopal (AME/CME) denominations; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • [AN] = animals; wild or domestic, not including cattle
  • [AR] = artists; folk or fine artists (painters, sculptors, etc.); does not include literature or architecture
  • [AS] = Asian topics, general (see specific codes for Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese)
  • [AT] = Arts and Crafts [architectural style]
  • [AU] = automobile topics (use in conjunction with [IN] to denote tourist courts, or with [BC] to denote dealerships or with [OL] to denote gas stations)
  • [AV] = aviation; includes aeronautical and space exploration topics, including prominent individuals in these fields; does not include astronomy
  • [AY] = astronomy
  • [BA] = Beaux Arts [architectural style]
  • [BC] = commercial buildings (includes bank buildings, mercantiles, office buildings)
  • [BE] = ecclesiastical buildings (churches, cathedrals, synagogues, convents, rectories, manses)
  • [BF] = factories, industrial buildings
  • [BG] = buildings; this is a very general code - check all specific codes carefully before selecting; must always be used in conjunction with secondary or tertiary clarifying codes, such as [BC], [BH], etc.
  • [BH] = houses, residential buildings (includes apartment buildings)
  • [BI] = institutional buildings (includes asylums, hospital buildings, orphanages, fraternal buildings, libraries, club buildings)
  • [BK] = banks, bankers, banking topics; use in conjunction with [BC] (commercial buildings) to indicate bank building
  • [BN] = Bungalow [architectural style]
  • [BP] = Baptist denomination; includes Missionary Baptist churches, Baptist associations; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • [BR] = bridges
  • [BS] = bandstands, public-speaking kiosks or stands (such as those found in public plazas)
  • [BT] = boats, ships, ferries, barges, and other marine vessels; does not include waterways
  • [BU] = business topics, general (could include companies, business leaders)
  • [BY] = botany; flowers, wild and domestic plants (as distinct from agriculture)
  • [CA] = cattle, cattle industry topics (brands, cattle drives, stockyards, cattle trails) does not include ranches, cowboys and cattlemen, or rodeos
  • [CB] = cabins, log houses
  • [CC] = Church of Christ denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • [CF] = Craftsman [architectural style]
  • [CG] = Carpenter Gothic [architectural style]
  • [CH] = churches; generally refers to church congregations; use in conjunction with denominational codes as available; does not include clergy [RL] or buildings [BE]
  • [CI] = Chinese immigrants/immigration
  • [CL] = colonization (replaces earlier code for empresarios); early colonizers, those who bring settlers into an area designated for settlement and development
  • [CM] = camp meetings; religious, social, military, political meetings, reunions, picnics; most commonly religious camp grounds, but can include chatauquas
  • [CN] = Colonial Revival [architectural style]
  • [CO] = counties; formation and development of a county, county seat elections
  • [CR] = Christian (Disciples of Christ) denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • [CS] = communications; radio, television, telegraph, computers; does not include newspapers, transportation, postal services
  • [CT] = courthouses; refers only to the structure (or site of a structure) that houses county government; does not refer to other county-related topic
  • [CV] = Civil War; generally used as a clarifying code with [ML]
  • [CW] = cowboys; individuals, including cattlemen (this is a code that distinguishes individuals from structures, places, events related to cattle industry)
  • [CY] = cities and towns; does not include ghost towns
  • [CZ] = Czech immigrants/immigration
  • [DC] = design and construction; individuals, processes, styles related to the design and construction of structures, such as architects, carpentry, cabinetry, lime kilns, brick kilns, architectural styles; does not include lumber or steel topics
  • [DG] = dugouts, sod houses, storm cellars
  • [DP] = railroad depots
  • [DS] = disasters, industrial/human-made (use [WT] for natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes
  • [DU] = duels, shoot-outs
  • [EA] = Eastlake [architectural style]
  • [EB] = educational buildings (includes schoolhouses, university campus buildings)
  • [ED] = educational topics; academies, schools, colleges, universities, teachers, educators; does not include special institutions such as orphanages or state schools for the handicapped; may be used in conjunction with other codes such as those for buildings
  • [EG] = engineering topics (dams, moonlight towers, etc.)
  • [EN] = English immigrants/immigration
  • EP = Episcopal denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • EX = exploration and expeditions; does not include cattle trails or early roads; usually will refer to early Spanish and French expeditions; does not include military expedition
  • FC = French immigrants/immigration
  • FD = fires and fire departments (use in conjunction with [BI] for fire stations)
  • [FL] = flags
  • [FM] = farms; land devoted to agricultural purposes (excluding ranches and plantations), includes special farms, such as fish hatcheries; does not include poor farms
  • [FN] = fences
  • [FO] = fraternal organizations; includes hunting clubs, does not include women's clubs [WC]
  • [FP] = federal programs; governmental programs such as the CCC, WPA, etc.
  • [FR] = fairs and festivals
  • [FS] = Four Square [architectural style]
  • [FT] = forts; includes stockades and other fortified structures
  • [FU] = funeral homes, undertakers
  • [GC] = Gothic Revival [architectural style]
  • [GE] = geology; includes any topic related to the history of the earth as recorded in rock, as well as geological features (caverns, canyons, etc.) and mines and mining; does not include iron mines or oil topics or mountains
  • [GK] = Greek Revival [architectural style]
  • [GM] = government officials; usually used in conjunction with a clarifying code to denote level of service
  • [GN] = German immigrants/immigration
  • [GO] = Georgian Revival [architectural style]
  • [GR] = grave sites; use [AC] for archeological burial sites
  • [GT] = ghost towns
  • [GV] = governors
  • [GY] = graveyards; cemeteries, not individual graves
  • [HO] = hospitals; includes medical clinics, research facilities; does not include doctors or health resorts; use in conjunction with [BI] for hospital buildings
  • [HR] = health resorts; resorts such as hot springs; does not refer to medical clinics
  • [IA] = Italian immigrants/immigration
  • [ID] = islands
  • [IL] = International [architectural style]
  • [IM] = immigration (replaces EU/European); generally used in conjunction with secondary or tertiary clarifying codes
  • [IN] = inns, hotels, motels; may be used with other codes to indicate special properties such as stagecoach inns [SG] or railroad inns [RR] or tourist courts [AU]
  • [IR] = Irish immigrants/immigration
  • [IS] = iron and steel; includes iron mining, steel industry
  • [IT] = Italianate [architectural style]
  • [IV] = inventors and inventions, as distinguished from scientific discoveries
  • [JA] = jails and prisons
  • [JL] = journalists
  • [JP] = Japanese immigrants/immigration
  • [JU] = judges, at all levels from local to national
  • [JW] = Jewish topics; refers to ethnicity as well as religion; often used in conjunction with other codes such as [BE] for synagogues or [RL] for rabbis
  • [KO] = Korean War
  • [LA] = labor topics; labor unions; labor leaders
  • [LB] = lumber topics; forests, trees, lumber mills and sawmills, recreational and commercial exploitation of forests and trees, conservation efforts
  • [LD] = land development; land surveys, land companies, promotional towns
  • [LE] = law enforcement 
  • [LG] = land grants
  • [LI] = libraries; use in conjunction with [BI] to denote library buildings
  • [LT] = lighthouses
  • [LU] = Lutheran denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [RE], [RL]
  • [LV] = livery stables; includes wagon yards, public corrals, blacksmith shops
  • [LW] = law and lawyers; does not include judges [JU] or law enforcement officers [OF]
  • [MA] = media
  • [MC] = Mexican immigrants/immigration
  • [MD] = medical topics and physicians; does not include facilities such as hospitals, clinics, health resorts; may include epidemics
  • [ME] = Methodist (Methodist Episcopal and United Methodist) denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [BE], [RL]
  • [MG] = manufacturing topics; all manufacturing topics not given specific codes (e.g., does not include oil industry, lumber industry, iron and steel industry, building construction, textile mills)
  • [MH] = merchants
  • [MI] = Mission [architectural style; see [MN] for mission sites]
  • [MK] = markets, mercantiles; does not include public market places such as farmers markets or mercantile buildings
  • [ML] = military topics; armies, battles, battle sites, military units, military expeditions, soldiers, veterans, wars; may be used in conjunction with [AV] for military aviation; do not use for forts; should be used in conjunction with secondary codes for specific wars:
  • [MM] = museums; museums of all types, including art, history, natural science, etc.; does not include buildings that later became museums
  • [MN] = missions
  • [MO] = monuments; structures erected to commemorate an event, person, topic
  • [MR] = Mediterranean [architectural style]
  • [MS] = mills - textile, fiber, gristmills, cotton gins; does not include steel mills or sawmills
  • [MT] = mountains and mountain passes; may be used in conjunction with other codes for more specific sites (e.g., [MT], [RR] for railroad mountain pass)
  • [MU] = music; does not include opera houses, bandstands, theaters
  • [MW] = Mexican War
  • [NA] = Native Americans; sites, individuals, groups, related topics
  • [NB] = neighborhoods
  • [NC] = Neoclassical [architectural style]
  • [NR] = Norwegian immigrants/immigration
  • [NW] = newspapers
  • [OC] = county official
  • [OF] = local law enforcement officers; does not include sheriffs or rangers
  • [OL] = oil/petroleum topics; includes oil wells, oil fields, boom towns, petroleum products and related oil industry topics
  • [OM] = municipal official
  • [ON] = national/federal official
  • [OP] = opera houses and theaters
  • [OR] = orphanages; includes state schools, foundling institutions, asylums, public homes, etc.; use in conjunction with [BI] to code historic orphanage buildings
  • [OS] = state official
  • [OU] = outlaws
  • [PC] = politics; political parties, organizations; political topics
  • [PF] = poor farms
  • [PH] = Polish immigrants/immigration
  • [PI] = pioneers; refers to individuals and families, not settlements
  • [PL] = plantations; usually associated with pre-Civil War period
  • [PK] = parks; includes plazas, public squares, public marketplaces, state and national parks
  • [PO] = post office; includes postal routes; use in conjunction with [BI] for historic post office buildings
  • [PR] = Presbyterian denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [RE], [RL]
  • [PS] = Prairie School [architectural style]
  • [PT] = ports
  • [QA] = Queen Anne [architectural style]
  • [RC] = Roman Catholic denomination; generally used in conjunction with another clarifying code such as [CH], [RE], [RL]
  • [RD] = roads; includes traces, paths, highways; does not include cattle trails, stagecoach routes, postal routes, railroads; does not include individually marked bridges, but does include fords and crossings
  • [RE] = religious topics, general
  • [RG] = rangers; includes Texas Rangers, border patrol; does not include sheriffs, local law enforcement officers, military ranger companies
  • [RL] = religious leaders; includes ministers, missionaries, priests, bishops, rabbis, etc.
  • [RM] = Art Moderne [architectural style]
  • [RN] = ranches/ranching; land and/or dwellings related to ranching
  • [RQ] = Romanesque/Richardsonian Romanesque [architectural style]
  • [RR] = railroad; includes railway companies, urban streetcar lines, interurbans, railroad construction topics; does not include railroad depots [DP]
  • [RS] = restaurants
  • [RU] = Russian immigrants/immigration
  • [RV] = Classical Revival [architectural style]
  • [SA] = Spanish American War

  • [VR] = vernacular [architectural term]
  • [WA] = water topics; all waterways and related topics, such as coastal waterways, harbors, canals, creeks, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams; does not include boats, bridges, or hot springs developed as health resorts
  • [WC] = women's clubs; can be used with clarifying codes such as [FO] for auxiliary clubs or
