John Ames Portrait - BioJohn R. Ames is the Dallas County Tax Assessor/Collector. He was first elected in November 2008 and re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. Mr. Ames is a Professional County Assessor-Collector (PCAC) and a Certified Tax Administrator (CTA). Additionally, he holds certifications as a Professional County Collector (PCC), a County Tax Office Professional (CTOP), a Registered Texas Assessor/Collector (RTA), and a Certified School Tax Administrator (CSTA). He also has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University.

Mr. Ames currently serves as an ex-officio member of the Dallas Central Appraisal District (DCAD) Board of Directors and previously served on the statewide board of the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) representing all County Tax Assessors. He is a past president of Tax Assessor-Collector Association of Texas (TACA) where he serves as a member of or chairs various committees. He is also a member of the Texas Association of Assessing Officers (TAAO) where he has served on various committees for both TAAO and the Institute of Certified Tax Administrators. He is a past officer of the Collin County TAAO chapter and the past president of the North Texas TAAO chapter. John is a past Board Trustee of the Texas School Assessors Association (TSAA) and a past board member of the Certified School Tax Administrators. He is a past president of the Texas Association of Municipal Tax Administrators (TAMTA) which was an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League (TML). He is also a former voting delegate for the Property Tax Education Coalition (PTEC).

Mr. Ames is committed to improving efficiencies and increasing technology in the Dallas County Tax Office. He believes that great customer service is the key to quality collections and has incorporated that philosophy in the Dallas County Tax Office Mission Statement:
