Traffic/Patrol Unit
Traffic/Patrol Deputies are trained to monitor and enforce the traffic laws within the county. The Traffic Unit is responsible not only for enforcing traffic laws but also for investigating accidents that occur. These deputies also patrol the unincorporated areas of Dallas County.
The goal of the deputy’s enforcement action is to educate the violator in an effort to gain voluntary compliance with traffic laws and ordinances. Enforcement action does not provide the deputy a privilege to scold, belittle, berate, or otherwise verbally reprimand a traffic violator. The deputy’s actions shall demonstrate a professional attitude and serve to improve the relationship between the motoring public and law enforcement officers.
Vehicle Crimes Unit
The Vehicular Crimes Unit responds to and investigates traffic collisions involving fatalities, serious or potentially life-threatening injuries, and hit-and-run accidents. The Dallas County Deputies are trained investigators to respond to and investigate offenses or incidents that involve motor vehicles. In 2023, they responded to and investigated more than 60 fatality crashes.

School Resource Officers
Although school resource officers serve as the main security arm of the schools in which they work, their job is more expansive than simply policing school grounds. Here are some other SRO duties:
Safety plan development: Schools have safety protocols in place to ensure students and staff are safe from harm. SRO duties include helping in developing best practices and then conducting drills – such as active shooter drills – for students and teachers to help prepare for the potential of a hostile threat to the school.
Detention and arrests: If a student is caught breaking the law – drinking or using drugs, bringing a weapon to school or making threats, part of a resource officer’s job description may be to detain or arrest the offender. Lesser infractions may be remanded to the principal or vice principal for punishment, such as detention or suspension.
Personal and property searches: Any school resource officers who have reason to suspect a student is breaking the law may be involved in conducting a physical search, such as a backpack, vehicle, or locker search.
School patrols: A resource officer’s job description also includes paroling school grounds, ensuring safety, looking for broken fencing and unlocked doors or gates, viewing video and closed-circuit TV security monitors, and watching for strangers or suspicious activity in or around campus.
Advanced safety functions: SRO duties may include supervising metal detectors in schools, staffing special events where large crowds are anticipated, and even directing foot and auto traffic when necessary.
Law enforcement education: School resource officers may give assembly presentations on subjects including school safety, the dangers of drug abuse and bullying, and online safety tips. SRO duties may also include being called upon to educate teachers and staff about various safety precautions and dangers.
It’s also in a resource officer’s job description to help protect against theft and property damage, assist in medical emergencies, and reduce the incidence of 911 calls from schools to emergency personnel.
