Communication Technician

The hiring of communication technicians occurs as needed by the department. Communication technicians monitor the county’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, radio communication frequencies as well as security and fire alarms. They dispatch appropriate support and provide necessary information to assist during routine and emergency operations.

Applicants should have the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • At least 4 years clerical/administrative work related experience, or
  • 60 hours of college, or a combination of the two,
  • Or 2 years as a 911 operator
  • Ability to type 35 wpm
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing

Communication technicians will be trained in telecommunication procedures. They will be required to become TCOLE certified as a terminal operator to use the TLNETS/NLETS, NCIC, TCIC and other computer crime systems.

All communication technician candidates must successfully pass the following in order to be hired:

  • Computerized Criminal History
  • Background Investigation
  • Polygraph
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Physical Examination
  • Drug Screening

Clerks

The hiring of clerks occurs as needed by the department. Clerks perform a variety of moderately complex tasks which may include: inputting, processing, and distribution of a variety of documents/records; collecting, compiling, filing and maintaining data; reconciling data, funds or inventory; and providing excellent customer service to the public. Clerks work within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures, under moderate supervision.

Applicants should have the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of work related experience, or
  • 30 hours of college, or a combination of the two
  • Ability to type 30 wpm
  • Knowledge of computer applications and standard word processing software
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
