Chief Deputy Office of Detention Services, Shane Sowell

Chief Deputy Shane Sowell has been employed with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office since January 2025. Before joining DCSO, Sowell served a short stint with Brazos County as a Compliance specialist and Internal Affairs Investigator. Sowell has served as the Jail Administrator for Bell and Webb Counties.

Sowell has over 28 years of law enforcement experience. He began his law enforcement career in 1996 as a jailer with a private correctional facility where he rose through the ranks quickly. In 2005, Sowell joined Lamb County Sheriff’s Office as the Jail Administrator later moving to patrol. During his tenure with Lamb County, Sowell worked in narcotics, warrants, as a hostage negotiator and as a K-9 interdiction specialist.

In 2015, Sowell was called to serve as a State Inspector with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. Sowell was assigned to sixty counties and was responsible for ensuring compliance with state standards, technical assistance and provided training throughout the State of Texas and on the Federal level.

Sowell is a graduate of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy (Class #32) at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Sowell currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Jail Association.
