Personnel Section:

The Personnel Section exists to recruit and hire the best qualified applicants for deputy, detention officer, and civilian positions, and to ensure the maintenance of a quality workforce. We strive to accomplish this through cooperation with the community we serve and comprehensive screening processes designed to identify capable candidates with sound judgment and integrity, and who possess the ability to become employees who exhibit professionalism and commitment to service to the citizens of Dallas County.

As secondary functions the Personnel Section serves as a repository for employee personnel records; coordinates time and attendance reporting, Family Medical Leave (FMLA), and Workers Compensation, and lateral transfers; provides employment reports to TCLEOSE; and issues departmental credentials.

The hiring of Detention Service Officers (DSOs) and clerical/technical staff occurs on an ongoing basis. DSOs are hired to serve as jailers licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE). All DSO applicants must successfully pass the following in order to be hired:

  • Computerized Criminal History
  • Background Investigation
  • Polygraph
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Physical Examination
  • Drug Screening

The hiring of deputies occurs as needed by the department, usually twice a year. All deputy applicants must pass a written civil service examination and a physical assessment. In order to be authorized to sit for the civil service examination the applicant must meet one of these criteria:

  • Two years satisfactory service as a DSO
  • At least thirty hours of college (from an accredited college) with at least a 2.5 GPA
  • Two years active military service with an honorable discharge, or
  • Two years of service as a Texas Peace Officer (currently serving) with a Basic Peace Officer Certificate

All deputy candidates must successfully pass the following in order to be hired as a deputy cadet and be placed in the Basic Peace Officer Course:

  • Computerized Criminal History
  • Background Investigation
  • Polygraph
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Physical Examination
  • Drug Screening
