Rebecca “Becky” Garcia — Juvenile Division Supervisor, Dallas County Public Defender’s Office

Rebecca “Becky” Garcia serves as Juvenile Division Supervisor at the Dallas County Public Defender’s Office, where she manages a team of five attorneys practicing across two district courts. The Juvenile Division represents clients aged 10 to 17 in delinquency matters, handling every stage of the process from initial detention hearings through final disposition.

Education & Background

A Dallas native raised in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, Becky earned her B.A. in English and Speech Communication from Texas A&M University in 2003 and her J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in 2007. She was licensed to practice in Texas that November and joined the Dallas County Public Defender’s Office in 2009 as a juvenile detention attorney. Over the course of her career, she has served as an assistant public defender in the misdemeanor division (2011–2013), the felony division (2013–2018), and the juvenile division (2018–2022), before being named Deputy Chief of the Misdemeanor Division in 2022. She stepped into her current role as Juvenile Division Supervisor later that year.

Values & Motivation

What Becky values most is working directly with children and their families in pursuit of lasting, long-term change. Her commitment to this work is rooted in a desire to serve the community she comes from. She leads by example, holding herself to the same standards she sets for her team, and approaches advocacy by holding the state accountable to its burden of proof while ensuring every client feels understood and supported throughout the process.
