When a doctor determines that a client is not competent to stand trial, they will recommend outpatient competency restoration (OCR), inpatient competency restoration (ICR), or jail-based competency restoration (JBCR, now Jail-In-Reach). All three programs are designed to help stabilize the client’s mental health and educate them about the legal process so they can participate in their defense.

Our attorneys and case managers monitor each client’s progress throughout competency restoration treatment to help clients regain competency and safely return to the community as soon as possible.

If a client is restored to competency, the mental health attorney will then work toward resolving the case, which may include dismissal of charges, a plea agreement, or trial.
