Attorneys in this group represent clients in cases where a mental health condition contributes to criminal system involvement. Mental Health Public Defenders work very closely with their counterparts in the District Attorney’s Office, and often leverage their specialized mental health legal training to obtain better outcomes for the client and community on referred cases. Attorneys in this group also represent clients who are found incompetent to stand trial and have a misdemeanor case, or have a felony case where one of our Public Defenders has been appointed to represent them. Our attorneys and case managers follow a client’s progress through the competency restoration programming so that a client can be restored to competency and the community as soon as is safely possible and then pursue positive case outcomes.
