Attorneys in the Misdemeanor Division of the Dallas County Public Defender’s Office represent indigent clients charged with Class A and B Misdemeanors. They handle a range of legal matters, including trials, probation revocations, evidentiary hearings, plea negotiations, and expunction petitions for "not guilty" verdicts. The division is committed to providing quality, client-centered representation and collaborates with other divisions and community partners to positively impact clients' lives. The leadership team includes a Chief, Deputy Chief, and two supervisors who oversee training, case guidance, client care, and support for the internship program.

  • Class A misdemeanors are punishable by up to one year in the County jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000, and that sentence may be probated. Common examples of Class A Misdemeanors are Assault, Driving While Intoxicated 2nd, and Evading Arrest.
  • Class B Misdemeanors are punishable by a sentence of up to 180 days in the County jail and a fine not to exceed $2,000, and that sentence may be probated. Common examples of Class B misdemeanors are Criminal Trespass, Theft (less than $750), and Driving While Intoxicated.
