Andy Sommerman is a longtime resident of Dallas County, and he is honored to represent the people of District 2 on the Dallas County Commissioners Court. He has frequently taken on pro bono voter protection cases to benefit our community and applies the same thinking to elections on the Commissioners Court.
As a County Commissioner, he strives to make meaningful contributions for the residents of Dallas County. Commissioner Sommerman’s current projects focus on providing workforce housing, ensuring access to affordable, high-quality childcare, and decreasing the jail population by opening deflection centers across the county. In addition, he is launching a community center for Esperanza residents.
He is an advocate for children in foster care, including those who are timing out, and provides resources for homeless individuals by partnering with nonprofits such as Housing Forward, Stewpot, and Austin Street. Commissioner Sommerman strives to build coalitions with public and private entities to deliver excellent services and create a better future for residents of Dallas County.
Commissioner Sommerman has given back to the community in several ways. He is a former member of the South Texas College of Law Board of Directors and enjoys sharing his expertise with future generations of lawyers by coaching moot court and mock trial. He has endowed scholarships at his alma maters; the University of Texas at Arlington and The South Texas College of Law. He founded the American Moot Court Association which teaches more than 1000 students every year across the county about advocacy and the ethical pursuit of argument.
Commissioner Sommerman is an avid reader, an aspiring master chef, and loves to travel. He lives in Dallas with his wife (whose biography is much more impressive than his), their daughter, and Einstein the cat.
