Legal Name Change

Legal Name Change Procedures

In order to legally change a person's name an order must be signed by a District Judge. There are legal procedures and requirements which must be fulfilled before a court hearing can be set.

County staff persons are not qualified to provide legal advice. For this reason, most people require the services of an attorney in order to complete the legal requirements for a name change. The procedures and requirements are detailed in books which can be found in a law library or in the Family Code found in the Texas Legislature Online. Additionally, forms are available from www.texaslawhelp.org.
