The Chemistry Unit supports public health initiatives by focusing on opioid surveillance. Although we are not yet conducting routine clinical tests, our work is central to monitoring controlled substances in de-identified urine specimens.
Opioid Surveillance Program
- Project Focus: Monitoring opioids—including fentanyl and its analogs—in de-identified urine specimens.
- Collaborative Approach: Working in partnership with regional hospitals and public health agencies to gather actionable data.
- Public Health Impact: Generating insights to inform targeted interventions and policy decisions addressing the opioid epidemic.
Analytical Capabilities
- Utilizes advanced methods such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, and immunochemical assays.
- Adheres to robust quality control protocols, as outlined in our SOP for Urine Drug of Abuse Screening.
- Provides reliable surveillance data to support public health strategies in Dallas County.
Impact and Future Directions
The data generated through our opioid surveillance initiative is critical in understanding drug use patterns across Dallas County. By analyzing de-identified urine specimens, the Chemistry Unit plays a pivotal role in developing targeted public health interventions and informing policy adjustments. Looking ahead, we are committed to enhancing our analytical capabilities and exploring additional biomarkers to broaden our surveillance efforts.
