Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is excited to introduce the Healthy Start program to residents of zip codes 75217, 75149, and 75150. This program offers free group-based education courses designed to promote healthy practices for expectant mothers, fathers, and new parents or guardians. Through these courses, participants will receive valuable guidance to support the well-being of their growing families.

Course Descriptions

American Lung Association's Freedom from Smoking®:

Are you ready to quit smoking? DCHHS trained staff will lead an 8-session, 7-week, group course designed to help you understand the benefit of quitting, to prepare you for "quit day," and to discuss medications, lifestyle changes, and stress management tips to help you stay smokefree. You will have support from others in the group; chances of succeeding are much better if all of the sessions are attended.

Nutrition Education for Diabetic Moms:

This course offers basic nutrition education to help plan meals and prepare food for people living with diabetes. Cooking demonstrations are part of each lesson, and participants will be cooking and tasting different recipes. Participants also receive quick dinner ideas and access to 25+ recipes that will help you cook well with diabetes.

Managing Diabetes and Hypertension During Pregnancy:

This class offers basic education and guidelines for managing diabetes and hypertension during pregnancy and after giving birth. The class also covers urgent maternal warning signs that can indicate serious complications and how to discuss chronic conditions, complications and other concerns with your health care provider.

Cooking Healthy and Affordable Meals:

Interested in learning how to shop for and prepare healthy affordable meals? Join us for sessions with DCHHS nutrition professionals where we cover topics such as plate balance, meal planning, nutrition label reading, and cost-effective strategies while shopping at the grocery store. Learn how to eat healthy, shop smart and save money.

Safe Sleep for Infants: 

Safe sleep is among the most important factors for new parents to master. Safe sleep can help protect babies from dangers including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other dangers, including choking and suffocation. The goal of the Safe to Sleep program is to educate parents and caregivers about ways to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other causes infant sleep-related deaths.
