PURPOSE:

The Beck Group, Dallas County and City of Dallas have teamed together for the School of Construction Program to strengthen effective working relationships with the small, minority and women owed businesses (SMWBE) in the North Texas Region. Additionally, this initiative creates an opportunity for participating SMWBEs to receive intensive technical assistance and business development training through local industry experts with demonstrated experience in serving the contracting business community. Up to 20 recipients will be tasked with completing a nine (9) session program that includes workshops and micro-classes centered on business development assistance to participating SMWBEs, with efforts focused on areas where there is a collective need for standard business acumen.

BENEFITS:

SMWBE will partner with local industry experts in delivering support and training on a range of business topics, including marketing, finance, contracting and safety, – tailored to the capacity needs of each participating SMWBE firm.

Training topics in this program, in addition to the areas identified above, will also include, but are not limited to:

  1. Sales (Elevator Pitch, Selling Techniques)
  2. Marketing (Market Research, Target Market, Positioning, Branding, Social Media, content management, Search engine optimization, web page development)
  3. Finance (Financial Literacy, Credit Repair, Financing, Insurance/Bonding, Loan Packaging, Financial Statement Analysis)
  4. Accounting (QuickBooks, Payroll, Accounts Receivable/Payable)
  5. Managerial/Business Operations (Employee Management, Project Management, Computer Skills, Human Resources, Workers Compensation)
  6. Legal (Compliance, Employment/Labor Law, Industry Regulations, Business Law)
  7. Contracting (Licensing, Bid Development, EEO/Workforce, Cost Estimating, Proposal Debriefs)

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY:

  • Currently certified as a Small, Minority, and/or Women-owned business enterprise by the North Central Texas Regional Certification Agency, Dallas Fort Worth Minority Supplier Development Council, Women Business Council Southwest, or Texas Department of Transportation.
  • SMWBE firm must have a local presence in North Texas Region.
  • Business in continuous operation for at the least 24 months.
  • Annual business revenue average a minimum of $100,000 in the past two years.
  • Must be able to complete all courses to be considered for graduation.

PROGRAM DURATION:

  • Application Deadline:  January 13, 2023
  • Program Length:  9 Months
  • Kickoff Meet and Greet Date:  January 24, 2023
  • Classes Start Date:  February 14, 2023 (2nd Tuesday of the month)
  • Class Time:  4:00 – 6:00 PM (2nd Tuesday of the month)
  • Location:  In-Person (CDC guidelines implemented)
