The Dallas County Healthy Start Program offers a variety of educational classes designed to support the health and well-being of women, infants, and families. From learning about various birth control methods to installing a car seat safely, our classes provide practical knowledge and hands-on guidance for every stage of pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenting. Led by experienced health professionals, these sessions equip participants with the tools, confidence, and resources to make informed choices and promote lasting wellness for themselves and their families. Eligible participants may even receive incentives such as gift cards, diapers, and more to support them in putting what they learn into practice.

Class Descriptions:
Car Seat Safety: Learn how to keep your child safe on the road. This class teaches parents how to properly install a car seat, safely buckle their child in, and understand key tips for child passenger safety. Gain the knowledge and confidence you need to make every ride a safe one. (Please note, this class has specific eligibility requirements to participate.)
Cooking Healthy and Affordable Meals - Cooking Matters: Want to eat well without breaking the bank? Join us for interactive sessions with DCHHS nutrition professionals to discover how to shop smartly and prepare balanced, affordable meals that cater to the whole family. These sessions cover nutrition basics such as meal planning and food label reading as well as providing tailored guidance for pregnant and breastfeeding moms and tips on how to encourage healthy eating habits in young children. These sessions are open to pregnant women, new parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in making healthier choices in the kitchen.
Empowered Choices: Understanding Birth Control Options: This informative and interactive session is designed to help individuals make confident, well-informed decisions about birth control. The class covers the full spectrum of contraceptive methods—from hormonal options like the pill, patch, and IUDs to non-hormonal alternatives such as condoms and fertility tracking. Participants will learn about effectiveness, potential side effects, accessibility, and how to choose a method that aligns with their health needs and lifestyle.
Gestational Diabetes - Diabetes During Pregnancy: Gestational diabetes can affect you and your baby's health - could you be at risk? In this interactive class you will learn about risk factors and potential complications of gestational, type 1, and type 2 diabetes before, during and after pregnancy. In addition, you will learn about healthy eating, exercise, prenatal care, strategies for breastfeeding, keys to successfully manage blood sugar levels, and how to make a personalized plan for a healthy pregnancy. Open to pregnant women, new parents, caregivers, and anyone planning for pregnancy or interested in gestational, type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
Preventative Care: This preventive care class aims to empower with knowledge and tools to proactively manage your health by focusing on what numbers you need to know, what preventive exams you need for disease prevention for both men and women.
Safe Sleep for Infants: Help your baby sleep safely and soundly. This class offers practical tips for reducing risks related to sleep, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), choking, and suffocation. Learn about safe sleep practices that promote your baby’s well-being and bring peace of mind to caregivers. Open to pregnant women, new parents, and anyone caring for an infant.
Smoke-Free: Give your Baby a Healthy Start: Create a smoke-free environment for your baby’s health and your own. This class provides practical tips and strategies to help you quit smoking and avoid tobacco exposure during pregnancy and beyond. Learn how a tobacco-free lifestyle can support a healthier pregnancy, reduce risks for your baby, and create a safer home for your family. Open to pregnant women, new parents, caregivers, and anyone committed to supporting a smoke-free environment.
