Role of the Commissioners Court
County governments in Texas have no ordinance-making powers other than those explicitly and narrowly granted by state law. The Commissioners Court sets the County tax rate, adopts the budget, appoints boards and commissions, approves grants and personnel actions, and oversees the administration of county government.
What Does a County Commissioner Do?
All Texas counties are governed by a 5-member Commissioner Court as established in the State Constitution. Each county is divided by population into four equal Commissioner’s districts (Road & Bridge Districts), from which each Commissioner is elected.
