Ways to Renew a Vehicle Registration
Customers may choose to renew their vehicle registration by:

- Walk-in at a Dallas County Tax Office location, or at a neighborhood location.
- If your registration is 30 or more days past the expiration date, or you have received a ticket for expired registration, please send an email to registrationstogo@dallascounty.org or visit one of our Tax Office locations to request instructions for how to register your vehicle, since your options are now limited.
Online Registration Information
Registrations can be processed online up to 90 days prior to the expiration date, or up to six months after the expiration date. To renew registration via the internet please click on the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles link below:
In-Person Registration Renewal
Registration for a passenger car, light truck (pickup truck, panel delivery truck or carryall truck), and motorcycle require proof of valid insurance, valid inspection (within 90 days of expiration of registration), valid photo identification (if the registration is more than 30 days expired) and if available the three part renewal notice issued by Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

Denial of Registrations or Renewals
Registration can be denied in instances such as missing insurance, customer resides out of county, or other required documentation is missing. Registration renewal may also be denied when a Scofflaw or a Child Support Block is notated in the system.
In order for a vehicle to be registered as an Antique Motor Vehicle and to receive antique license plates, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old. The customer must complete the Application for Antique License Plates from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, Form VTR-54. To obtain registration, proof of insurance or waiver from the Texas Department of Public Safety (SR-2), documentation verifying ownership and the required fees must be provided.
Trailers with a gross weight of 4,000 pounds and under are not titled unless expressly requested.
Trailers with a gross weight of 7,500 pounds or more must be inspected prior to registration renewal.

Dallas County Tax Office will issue a maximum of three 30-day temporary tags for a passenger vehicle, light truck, and motorcycle. When purchasing any type of temporary tag, the customer must have the completed Application for Timed Temporary Permits form (VTR-66), insurance on that vehicle in their own name, copy of the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) and a current, valid photo ID.
If the customer purchasing the temporary tag is purchasing the tag on behalf of someone else, then the purchaser must have a signed Power of Attorney form (VTR-271) and a copy of the photo ID for the individual for whom they are purchasing the tag, as well as a copy of the insurance on that vehicle in that person’s name and a copy of the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) on that vehicle and a completed Application for Timed Temporary Permits form (VTR-66).
