As the clerk of county courts, the county clerk is the custodian of the court records and is responsible for maintaining the records of the civil courts. Dallas County has five (5) county courts at law, which hear all civil court cases. Using our automated case management system, Odyssey, the civil division processes approximately 9200 cases each year.

The county courts in Dallas County, are similar to the state district courts having unlimited jurisdiction as it relates to damages awarded by a jury: controversy of $20,000 to multi-millions of dollars.

The civil courts also hear cases that are appealed from the justice of the peace courts, cases transferred from the state district courts as well as foreign judgments (judgments executed in other counties or states).
