On March 6, 2021, at about 12:25 am, victim Jose Amezquita was driving home alone, traveling northwest on Joaquin Dr. through the intersection of Ferguson Rd. The defendant, Francisco Loredo, was driving with an adult passenger and three minor children in his vehicle. Crash Data Retrieval showed the defendant was speeding over the limit, 73 mph in a 40 mph zone, with 100% throttle input when he disregarded a red signal light and collided with the driver side of the victim’s vehicle. Mr. Amezquita died from his injuries at the scene of the crash. After smelling a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the defendant’s mouth, police initiated a DWI investigation. Toxicology analysis revealed that the defendant had alcohol and active THC in his system. When the defendant’s vehicle was impounded, it was discovered that the defendant had an open bottle of brandy on the floorboard and there were no child passenger safety seats in the vehicle.
Mr. Amezquita’s family was in attendance for the plea hearing, including the victim’s son via virtual link as he is currently serving in the US Navy.
