At one point while in the closet, the defendant urinated on the victim. After nearly two hours in the closet, the victim gathered up his courage and tried to push his way out of the closet past the defendant. However, the defendant retaliated, punching and striking the victim multiple times causing a fractured nose, swollen eye, and a laceration on the back of his head. The day before the trial began, the victim decided he did not want to testify and planned to refuse to say anything. Although he ultimately did show up, it was an uphill battle getting him to testify to everything that occurred. Nonetheless, the defendant was found guilty by a jury and elected to go to the judge for punishment.

The defendant and his victim met on Christmas Eve in 2020 and began a romantic relationship. By March of 2021, the victim knew she had to end the relationship after seeing too many red flags. The defendant did not want the relationship to end. He stalked the victim relentlessly for the next 30 days. He even went back to her home days after she shot him when he came onto her property. Using surveillance videos, text messages, repeated 911 calls, and Facebook messages, Detective Whaley was able to see through the defendant’s antics and charge him with stalking. The jury agreed.
In the punishment phase of the trial. The jury heard that the defendant had been sentenced to prison before for stalking a different woman in 2003. The jury also heard from the defendant’s ex-wife who told her story for the first time since 2019, when the defendant stalked her in another county. The jury found both women’s testimonies compelling and wanted to send a message that the defendant was a predator, and his victims were extremely brave to come forward. The jury assessed the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
