In June of 2022, a married couple was living in a North Dallas apartment with their three-year-old and eight-month-old daughters. The defendant, Infant Johnson, and co-defendant, Quincy Edwards, believed the couple had a large amount of cash in the apartment. Late one night, they got a third man to knock on the door while Johnson and Edwards hid around the corner, armed with guns. When the male victim opened the door, Johnson and Edwards rushed in. Edwards shot the male victim in the stomach, Johnson shot him two more times, killing him. The female victim walked out of the bathroom and Johnson shot her in the head, killing her. Johnson stole property from the apartment and all three suspects fled together.

The next day, Johnson and Edwards returned to the apartment multiple times to steal more property. During one trip into the apartment, the three-year-old spoke with her parents’ killers, asking for help. About 60 hours after the murders, the three-year-old walked out of the apartment and a neighbor heard her crying. The child led the neighbor back into the apartment where the neighbor saw the dead parents and rescued the eight-month-old.

Detectives pieced together surveillance video showing a vehicle bringing the suspects to the scene. That vehicle was connected to the girlfriend of Edwards and the clothing the suspects were wearing matched clothing they were pictured wearing on social media. Additionally, Edwards and Johnson were linked to a similar aggravated robbery the year before in Fort Worth. Phone records and GPS information also showed the two suspects coming and going from Johnson’s apartment and the murder scene. Finally, Johnson sent a Facebook message saying he needed to bury a weapon about two days after the murder.

The jury convicted Johnson, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Edwards was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

GUILTY and sentenced to LIFE in prison without the possibility of parole.

State vs. Dezmon Looney

Capital Murder

Lead: Zachery Brown

2nd Chair: Erik Lisowski

DA Investigators: John Davison, Zachary Johnston

DA Victim Advocate: Melinda Shelton

DA Paralegal: Madelein Garcia

Investigating Agency: Dallas Police Department

Defendants Jakylon Willingham and Jayrien Garrett met while on probation in the Intensive Intervention Court Program at the Intermediate Sanction Facility (ISF). While in court they began texting and planning to commit future robberies together.

On April 4, 2024, Willingham and his girlfriend Dezmon Looney picked up Garrett and drove to the Royal Lane Condominiums to execute their plan to carry out a robbery. Once at the apartment, defendant Looney went in first, while the other two male co-defendants waited downstairs with their faces covered. Once Looney exited the apartment, defendant Willingham confronted the victim and the two engaged in a short argument before three gunshots were heard by witnesses. Defendant Willingham then entered the apartment and took a jar containing marijuana and assorted pills. The three met back at their vehicle which was parked at the neighboring apartment complex. The vehicle had battery and starter issues and the three were unable to get the car started, so the defendants then ran. The vehicle, drugs and Willingham’s phone were all left at the scene. The vehicle was registered to Willingham’s mother and tied to a prior shooting incident from March 26th involving Willingham as a suspect. Police tied that incident back to a March 22nd Aggravated Robbery. Firearms analysis later confirmed the March 22nd, March 26th, and April 4th incidents all involved the same firearm, and investigations linked Willingham to all three.

During the March 22, 2024, Aggravated Robbery, Defendant Willingham approached the driver side of the vehicle with a gun drawn, fired a round in the ground, and demanded the passenger get out and remove her two-month-old nephew from the vehicle. Defendant Looney approached the victim on the passenger side and told her Willingham would shoot her, so the victim exited the vehicle and the two defendants took the vehicle, fled the location and abandoned the vehicle nearby.

The jury convicted Defendant Looney of the lesser charge of Aggravated Robbery. Looney agreed to waive appeal and agreed to 25 years in prison. Previously, defendant Willingham pleaded guilty to the April 4th Capital Murder (reduced to Murder) and the March 22nd Aggravated Robbery for a sentence of LIFE in prison.

GUILTY of Aggravated Robbery and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
