The Academy for Academic Excellence, chartered in 1999, provides educational services to all students residing in a Dallas County Juvenile Department institution and transitioning out of a residential placement to their home. The curriculum at the five campuses is designed to meet the unique needs of pre and post-adjudicated youth. Core components of the educational program include:
- Individualized assessment
- Student academic planning
- Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) based curriculum
- Individualized computer-assisted instruction
- STAAR and EOC test preparation
- Career and Technology Education
- High School Equivalency Diploma test preparation
School curriculum also addresses the needs of the at-risk learner. A full range of Special Education and ESL services are available to all students, and are provided by state certified staff. After a classroom assessment is completed, students receive instruction in the core subjects of Math, Science, English/Language Arts, and Social Studies. Instruction is provided to help the students make improvement in any identified areas of weakness.
There are five campuses of Academy for Academic Excellence:
- Dr. Jerome McNeil Jr. Detention Center Campus
Detention Center, RDT, START, and Hill Center residents attend classes Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students work in a class with no more than 12 students with certified or highly qualified teachers. Depending on educational needs, students can participate in a GED/HSEP preparation program or a credit recovery program. - Day Reporting Center
The Day Reporting Center (DRC) is a transitional campus that provides students with a high-quality academic environment that focuses on preparing students to transition back into their traditional educational setting. DRC is intended to be a temporary placement for students who are transitioning from an alternative setting. The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:10 p.m. Parents can choose to drop off and pick up their student or opt for the use of DART transportation.
The DRC offers: - Regular Academic Program: Students (grades 6-12) take their appropriate course for the four core subjects and receive additional Math and English enrichment. DRC offers small class sizes, allowing students to get necessary academic assistance.
- GED/HSED Program: Students are able to receive free GED preparation and take the test at no cost to them. Credit Recovery Program: Eligible high school students are able to participate in the credit recovery program where they can gain academic credit needed to complete graduation requirements.
- Special Programs: Students who have been identified as Special Education or English as a Second Language (ESL) students receive all required accommodations and specialized assistance.
- Educational Advocacy: This team of case managers facilitates the successful transition back to a student’s community school.
- Youth Village and Medlock
Youth Village and Medlock residents attend school daily on their respective campuses. A student’s performance in school is part of their program progression. An educational representative is present at all treatment team meetings and the teachers provide reports regarding the students’ progress and conduct in school. Small class sizes enable students to receive individualized attention. High school students have the option to attend credit recovery programs through Odysseyware computer programs. The students have access to Career and Technical Education Programs and classes to obtain their GED/HSED. There are also Special Education and English Language Learners programs for students. - Letot Center
Emergency shelter residents attend classes on site from 8a.m. to 3p.m. Many of the Letot students are returning to school after a long absence from daily classroom instruction. Letot teachers tailor instruction to the unique needs of its students. The Letot campus offers instruction in the core subjects as well as credit recovery courses.
