Christopher Coggins is a 54-year-old man with no criminal history who still lived at home with his 81-year-old mother in Irving, Texas. He was arrested in June 2021 for injury to an elderly person in which he pushed his mother and held her in a room. He was fixated on making her explain why he was adopted and why she could not have children. He pleaded guilty on January 27, 2022, to deferred adjudication and was released from the Dallas County jail. Four days later, he murdered his mother with a hammer in her home. The neighbor/best friend spoke daily to the victim, and when she stopped responding to texts and wouldn’t open her door, she called for help. The Irving Police Department forced entry into the home and found the victim bludgeoned to death, stuffed into a Christmas tree bag, and hidden under a bunch of trash in the garage. They also found the defendant hiding in the attic with the victim’s blood on his shoes.

DA Investigator: John Davison
Investigating Agency: Irving Police Department
The defendant was dating the 6-year-old victim’s aunt, and after an argument the night prior, the defendant began to demand for the vehicle that the victim’s aunt was borrowing be returned. When it was not returned that morning November 13, 2020, the defendant went over to the aunt’s house with a shotgun, went to her backdoor, and shot through the door. The 6-year-old victim was struck by several pellets from the shotgun on her face, neck, chest, and arm while she was seated on the couch in the living room watching her iPad and waiting for her father to come pick her up. Garland PD was on scene within a few minutes and was able to get the victim to the ambulance and transported to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries, however, doctors were not able to remove the pellets from the victim and many remain lodged in her body. The defendant fled back to his house where he called 911 saying the aunt was the one to fire the gun but would blame him. The defendant eventually confessed to detectives and admitted he saw the 6-year-old victim sitting on the couch from the backdoor prior to shooting through the door. He said he was doing so to scare the aunt into giving him the keys to the car.

State vs. Joey Guzman
Assault/Family Violence
Lead: Heather Ragsdale
2nd Chair: Renson Abraham
DA Investigator: Darrell Simmons
Investigating Agency: Mesquite Police Department
The defendant and victim had been in a dating relationship for approximately a year and a half when on June 14, 2022, the defendant assaulted the victim by punching her several times in the head, knocking her to the ground, and then strangling her with his hands. The defendant then dragged the victim down the hallway and into the bedroom where he continued to assault her by hitting and kicking her. Her friend, upon seeing her injuries, took her to the Dallas Regional Medical Center, and while at the hospital a nurse notified a patrol officer for Mesquite PD that there was someone she believed to be a domestic violence victim. Det. Ninedorf of Mesquite PD responded to her room and investigated the assault. Det. Ninedorf’s investigation included the victim’s statement, photographs of her injuries and a recorded video of her speaking with the defendant, in which she was explaining the severity of her injuries stating, “You could have killed me,” to which the defendant responded, “I should have.” After Det. Ninedorf’s investigation an At Large warrant for the defendant was issued for Assault Family Violence Impede Breath/Circulation. The victim’s injuries included a very bruised and swollen neck, several cuts on her neck surrounded by purple bruises, and bruising on her arms and legs. Her medical records also showed that she had suffered swelling/hematoma to the head.
