The Restorative Justice Division (RJD) is dedicated to changing the face of traditional prosecution. Assistant District Attorneys either serve in the Mental Health Division or in the various Specialty Courts and Diversion Programs in Dallas County.
The Mental Health Division prosecutes defendants diagnosed with mental illness while safeguarding the interests on the citizens of Dallas County. The prosecutors seek all forms of available treatment, services or diversionary court programs for defendants whose cases are accepted into the division. The division includes Competency and Insanity attorneys who handle matters including, but not limited to, monitoring all out-patient competency restoration and monitoring out-patient insanity releases from State Hospitals into the community. See Mental Health Division tab for more information and resources.
On the Specialty Court/Diversion side, the prosecutors shed their normal adversarial role and work with Judges, defense attorneys, community corrections case managers, law enforcement and treatment partners to provide a judicially supervised regimen of treatment and innovative case management to substance use disorder/mental health offenders with the goal of returning sober, law abiding residents to the community thereby closing the “revolving door” in the criminal justice system.
Two of these above programs are DA driven and DA funded.
