What is Obesity?

Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation. An adult who has a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight and an adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

Causes of Obesity

Obesity affects children as well as adults. Many factors can contribute to excess weight gain including:

  • Eating patterns
  • Physical activity levels
  • Sleep routines
  • Social determinants of health
  • Genetics
